Whitney Young statue unveiled by Urban League

Hundreds of nattily attired guests packed the ballroom of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel Wednesday evening for the Greater Washington Urban League’s 35th annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala.

Held in early spring, the event pays homage to the civil rights leader, who served as president of the National Urban League until his untimely death in 1971 at age 49.

This year’s tribute — fittingly titled “Thirty Five Years … The Legacy Continues” — featured the unveiling of a lifelike wax figure of Mr. Young and remarks from each of his successors in the role of Urban League president and chief executive officer: Vernon E. Jordan Jr. (1972-1981), John E. Jacob (1982-1994), District native Hugh B. Price (1994-2003) and former New Orleans Mayor Marc H. Morial, the national organization’s current president and CEO.

Former Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman and NBC News4 anchor Jim Handly served as masters of ceremonies.
