Recession woes may have many families worrying about money during this holiday season, but a glance at “how the other half lives” can function as a welcome escape from reality. In Northern Virginia suburbs such as McLean and Great Falls, upscale homes are still attracting buyers looking for sophisticated appointments and plenty of space for entertaining on a grand scale.
Gulick Group Inc. builds luxury homes (and some relatively more affordable homes, too) in Fairfax and Loudoun counties, always with a distinctive approach to maximizing natural light while maintaining privacy.
At Chadwick in Great Falls, Gulick Group is building four homes on 1-acre homesites off Georgetown Pike. Residents will enjoy a bucolic lifestyle but can reach Great Falls Village Centre and Reston Town Center within minutes, along with Tysons Corner.
The homes will have all-brick exteriors with painted wood trim, a sodded or seeded lawn with custom-designed landscaping, an asphalt driveway, brick steps, a brick stoop and a three-car side-entry garage.
Inside, the homes have a minimum of 9-foot ceilings on all three levels, oak stairs to the upper level, three-piece crown moldings and a remote-controlled gas fireplace in the family room with a custom wood mantel. Buyers can select the finish for the hardwood floors to be installed in the foyer, library, living room, dining room, kitchen, morning room and mudroom.
The baths each have glazed tile floors. The master bath has a soaking tub and a separate, glass-enclosed shower. The kitchen has 42-inch wood cabinets, granite counters and upgraded appliances, including a gas cooktop with a grill and downdraft ventilation system. The homes also have high-tech wiring, gas hot water and dual-zone gas heat and electric air conditioning.
The Winthrop Manor model has more than 7,700 finished square feet and is priced from $2,250,000. This home has a two-story foyer with a curving staircase to the upper level and decorative columns framing the entrances to the formal living room and the formal dining room.
Just beyond the living room are a powder room and corner library. Decorative columns and archways frame the entrances to the octagonal two-story library, which has a gas fireplace and walls of windows.
The center-island kitchen opens into the morning room, which has glass doors with transom windows opening onto the optional deck. Near the kitchen is a rear staircase to the upper and lower levels. There are also a butler’s pantry, a walk-in pantry, a mudroom, a walk-in closet and a laundry room. The model home at Chadwick includes the optional deck, a full bath on the main level in addition to the powder room and sunroom with a tray ceiling off the morning room.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a tray ceiling and an optional gas fireplace in the bedroom, along with two walk-in closets. Double doors lead into the master sitting room, which has decorative columns on either side of the entrance into the bedroom. A second set of double doors links the dressing area with the master bath, which has two separate vanities, a corner soaking tub and an oversized shower with a seat.
The second bedroom has a walk-in closet and a private full bath. The third and fourth bedrooms share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity. Each has a walk-in closet. The model home at Chadwick features an optional fifth bedroom and fourth full bath upstairs.
A gallery on the upper level overlooks the foyer, which has an arched ceiling, and the family room, which has a tray ceiling.
The model home at Chadwick showcases the optional finished lower level, a walk-out basement with a walk-behind wet bar and an octagonal recreation room with decorative columns and a gas fireplace. Other rooms on this level include a den, an exercise room, a media room, a game room, a full bath and storage rooms.
