OPINION:
In her column “Many teens opt to get pregnant” (On the family, Tuesday), Cheryl Wetzstein paraphrased Sarah S. Brown, chief executive officer of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy: “Parents can best address teen pregnancy - intended and unintended - by talking constantly with their children about getting an education, setting life goals, getting married and starting a family. Talk a lot about ’the timing’ of these events, and be clear about your views. It’s also important to explain to teens that babies and children do best with adult parents - mothers and fathers - who are committed to each other and can provide a stable home.” This needs to be repeated.
In the same edition, the letter “The value of fatherhood,” commenting on the Sunday Pop’s culture column by Roland C. Warren, president of the National Fatherhood Initiative, spoke of the necessity of fathers and how Planned Parenthood has devastated black families by effectively removing fathers. Mrs. Brown, Mr. Warren and just about everyone but Planned Parenthood understands that fathers are essential for the well-being and wholesome development of children. Perhaps Mrs. Brown and Mr. Warren could help convince Congress that the billions of dollars it has given Planned Parenthood has hurt families and that it can help black families by redirecting that money to helping rebuild families.
