The committee begins its first look into the treatment of U.S.-held detainees. The Abu Ghraib scandal and waterboarding have brought the issue of torture into the national spotlight. Richard Shiffrin, former Defense Department deputy general counsel for intelligence; Lt. Col. Daniel Baumgartner Jr., former Joint Personnel Recovery Agency chief of staff; Dr. Jerald Ogrisseg, former U.S. Air Force Survival School Training Group chief of psychology services; and former U.S. Navy General Counsel Alberto Mora are scheduled to testify.
Tuesday, June 17: American Bankers Association Economic Advisory Committee forecast
The group presents its biannual monetary policy predictions and economic perspectives at a press conference heavily attended by chief economists from some of the country’s largest banks. The slumping economy has many in the industry looking for long- and short-term answers, as problems in the mortgage industry continue to create difficulties with other types of spending.
Tuesday, June 17: California begins issuing same-sex marriage licenses
Just over a month since the California Supreme Court struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriages, the state will begin to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Massachusetts and California are the only states that recognize same-sex marriage. Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont have legal unions for homosexual couples that give them rights similar to those of married couples.
Wednesday, June 18: Britney Spears trial hearing
Troubled pop singer Britney Spears is scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles court to face charges of driving without a valid license. Mrs. Spears’ case relates to an August 2007 incident in which she scraped a parked car in a private parking lot while her license was previously suspended.
Wednesday, June 18: NRCC and NRSC President’s Dinner
The National Republican Senatorial Committee and National Republican Congressional Committee host the President’s Dinner, attended by President Bush at the Washington Convention Center. The event is to help raise $7 million to help rebuild the Republican majority in the House.
Friday, June 20: Annual Conference of Mayors
The annual four-day event this year is in Miami. Mayors from across the country meet to discuss their cities’ economic, transportation, health services and other urban development issues.

Monday, June 16: D.C. Council addresses new police initiatives
The hearing - Public Safety Initiatives and Their Impact on Civil Liberties - will address several new city police initiatives, including checkpoints at entrances to neighborhoods, officers carrying assault rifles and warrantless searches of homes to find guns.INTERNATIONAL
Sunday, June 15: Condoleezza Rice in Middle East for Israeli-Palestinian talks
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visits Israel and the West Bank to discuss the Middle East peace process and is scheduled to meet with senior officials from Israel and the Palestinian Authority to discuss progress being made to achieve agreement this year on the establishment of a Palestinian state.
