QUOTABLE
“I found a way to make 5 or worse four different ways. Beautiful, isn’t it?”
- Tiger Woods joking about his poor play on Congressional Country Club’s 11th hole, a converted par 5 measuring 489 yards on which he was 5 over on the week
“I won’t be back next year. It’s a shame because it’s a fabulous tournament, but that’s what happens when you let novices come in and ruin our livelihoods.”
- England’s Ian Poulter, who finished third at the French Open despite a photographer who clicked away with no regard for golf etiquette during his final round
BY THE NUMBERS
$187,904 Danny Lee needs to earn in a temporary special exemption to play the rest of the season on the PGA Tour. By virtue of his season-best tie for seventh in the AT&T National, Lee is automatically exempt for this week’s John Deere Classic. Barring any more top-10 finishes, he then will have two remaining starts via sponsor’s exemption to reach the figure.
25 - Consecutive made cuts by Charley Hoffman, the second-longest active streak behind Tiger Woods’ 38. The 32-year-old veteran last missed a cut a year ago this week at the John Deere Classic, where he is again in the field this week.
MASTER OF MASTERS
As Tiger Woods races toward Sam Snead’s record for PGA Tour victories, perhaps the most remarkable statistic on his resume is how much more frequently he wins compared with the game’s other legends. Here’s a closer look at the 12 players with the most victories since 1935 and their winning percentages*:
Player Wins Starts Pct
Tiger Woods 68 245 27.76
Ben Hogan 64 294 21.77
Byron Nelson 52 32 216.15
Sam Snead 82 549 14.94
Cary Middlecoff 40 317 12.62
Jack Nicklaus 73 59 412.29
Lloyd Mangrum 36 363 9.92
Billy Casper 51 556 9.17
Phil Mickelson 36 396 9.09
Arnold Palmer 62 734 8.45
Vijay Singh 34 420 8.10
Tom Watson 39 594 6.57
• Though both Walter Hagen (42) and Gene Sarazen (39) are among the top 10 in total wins, there are no accurate records for total PGA Tour starts before 1935.
U.S. YOUTH MOVEMENT
As recently as the start of last season, there wasn’t a single 20-something American in the top 30 of the world rankings. Now there are four such players and a host of other young U.S. players stacked up behind them:
