No money for a home renovation? No worries, says Kate Hart, a home stager in Philadelphia.

“It’s quite possible to transform the look of your home with little — or even no — money,” Ms. Hart says. “It just means smart, selective shopping and getting creative.”

For example, maybe you can host a furniture swap with friends?

Invite your neighbors and friends and have them bring home accessories, lighting, area rugs and small furniture that they would like to trade. Draw numbers to decide who gets to go first. Then select the item of your choice. If the furniture is too big to bring to the party, just bring a photo. The “winner” can pick up the piece later.

Other tips from Ms. Hart for transforming your home on the cheap: shopping secondhand, repainting rooms and furniture, adding new hardware to old kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and negotiating sticker prices at furniture stores.
