Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has returned to Howard University Hospital after complications from his recent kidney transplant.

Spokeswoman Natalie Williams told The Washington Post that Mr. Barry, a current D.C. Council member, had gone back to the hospital Monday night for a routine checkup when doctors discovered an “abnormality.” She did not specify what complications Mr. Barry is suffering from.

Ms. Williams said Mr. Barry was admitted to the hospital for further observation. WRC-TV first reported that Mr. Barry had returned to the hospital.

A news briefing is scheduled for late Wednesday afternoon to provide updates on Mr. Barry’s condition.
