(Getty Images)President Obama has ordered a review of U.S. intelligence gathered on Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged gunman in the mass shooting at Fort Hood in which 13 people died and 29 others were wounded, the White House said Thursday.
The order was announced amid revelations that Maj. Hasan, a Muslim and Army psychiatrist, might have connections with terrorists or people connected to terrorists.
The FBI reportedly knew Maj. Hasan, 39, contacted radical Muslim cleric Anwar al Awlaki as many as 20 times. However, agents reportedly determined the e-mails were researched related and did not contact Army officials.
Mr. Obama sent the letter to the secretary of Defense, the director of National Intelligence and the director of the FBI.

Mr. Obama ordered the investigation the day after the Nov. 5 shootings at Fort Hood, the sprawling military base in central Texas.
“In addition [to the inventory], I directed an immediate review be initiated to determine how any such intelligence was handled, shared and acted upon within individual departments and agencies and what intelligence was shared with others,” Mr. Obama wrote.
The results of the inventory, a review and recommendations for improvements to procedures and practices will go to John Brennan, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism.
The preliminary results of the review are expected to be made public by Nov. 30.
