Firefighters hurt at house blaze

Two firefighters suffered minor burns during a blaze in the 1900 block of Kearney Street Northeast. One firefighter was being treated for burned ears, and another for a burned forearm. Both were expected to be treated and released.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said the fire took about 15 to 20 minutes to put out Saturday and that three people were home at the time of the fire but were able to safely evacuate. A 27-year-old occupant was transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation but was expected to be released.

Man falls, dies while trimming tree

A man trimming a tree branch with a chain saw Saturday died after falling off the ladder he was using.

Maryland police and fire rescue officials arrived to find the 35-year-old man dead. Montgomery County police said that the man fell about 30 feet to the ground and that the chain saw caused an injury to his upper body.

Officials did not disclose the man’s name.

Man identified in Friday shooting

Police responding to a report of a theft in progress fatally shot a suspect about 1 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, Fairfax County police identified the man as David Alan Masters, 52, of Fredericksburg. Mr. Masters was shot after failing to stop his car for police.

Three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

HAMPTON

Governor assesses storm damage

Gov. Tim Kaine visited flood-ravaged neighborhoods in Hampton, where officials put the structural damage from a wet and windy storm at $3 million.

Stopping in the city’s Riverdale section, Mr. Kaine said he would seek federal assistance to help people rebuild.

Mr. Kaine was joined by several Virginia congressmen on his tour that was to include Norfolk later in the day.
