ANNAPOLIS -- Republican Larry Hogan is exploring a run for governor in Maryland.

Mr. Hogan said Monday he would back former Gov. Robert Ehrlich if Mr. Ehrlich decides to run. However, Mr. Hogan said he's going to test the waters for support in the event that Mr. Ehrlich decides against a rematch against Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley in 2010.

Mr. Hogan said he plans to launch a Hogan for Maryland committee on Tuesday to begin gauging support.

Mr. Hogan served as Maryland's secretary of appointments in Mr. Ehrlich's Cabinet. He also ran against Rep. Steny Hoyer in 1992, picking up about 44 percent of the vote.

Delegate Patrick McDonough, Baltimore County Republican, and attorney Mike Pappas also are running for the GOP nomination in the governor's race.
