I am a 72-year-old retired teacher who is very satisfied with his health care coverage under Medicare but is still hungry for reform of our health care system (“Obama’s sick obsession,” Editorial, Monday).

I favor a single-payer system along the lines of government-run Medicare. No one in America should be without health care coverage. It is one area of our society that should not be for profit.

Government-run health care for all would be better than the profit-driven, selected care - or non-care - provided by private insurance companies. Yes, it is socialism, but socialism is not all bad; there is still enough capitalism around to offer our citizens opportunities to get rich. We would be a kinder, gentler, more compassionate society if we, like every other industrialized nation in the world, had universal health care coverage.
