In addition to the devastating effect it has on employment, real wages, traffic congestion and general quality of life, illegal immigration fuels crime (“Arizona acts as Washington dithers,” Commentary, April 28).

Phoenix has become the kidnapping capital of the United States, and violence from Mexico is spilling over into Arizona, as shown by the murder of rancher Robert Krentz and many other incidents. Illegal immigration also goes hand in hand with drug smuggling, as illegal aliens who act as drug mules provide additional income for smugglers.

It’s long overdue that President Obama and his Cabinet should start showing some concern for Americans, the unemployed, the underemployed, the impoverished and the victims of crime and fight illegal immigration instead of making it worse with amnesty proposals. Not surprisingly, illegal immigration has climbed after every previous amnesty initiative.

Arizona’s new law shouldn’t be condemned but rather emulated by other states and, above all, by the federal government.
