ALEXANDRIA, Va. | A judge has ordered a 14-year-old boy detained after police charged him with firing a rifle and striking a school bus loaded with students.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which occurred Wednesday. A bus driver leaving Glasgow Middle School near the Bailey’s Crossroads section of Fairfax County heard what sounded like a gunshot after pulling out of the school Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called, and determined the bus had been hit with a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle.

The unidentified 14-year-old was arrested Thursday morning. Police spokesman Don Gotthardt said investigators are trying to determine whether the teen intended to shoot the bus. He said the working theory is that the boy had been shooting at birds.

About 30 students were on the bus.
