OPINION:
It is a great irony that those the left initially blamed for the attempted New York car bombing and those they most suspect of harboring anti-intellectual dispositions are actually those most likely to apply reasoned deliberation to issues and events (“Blame the white man,” Comment & Analysis, Wednesday).
Maybe that’s because reasonable people know that conservatives, liberals, socialists, libertarians, religionists and secularists alike are flawed and fragile and that no human or human movement has a monopoly on the truth. This disposition is conducive to dispassionate reasoning, while slavery to an ideology produces a certainty that recognizes only “allies” and “enemies,” rather than the humility that is necessary forthe open-minded balancing of facts and data.
