A Prince George’s County police officer fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at him, authorities said Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 9:52 p.m. Saturday night when an officer driving in the 7500 block of Greenleaf Road observed a man lying in the grass on the side of the road, police said.

When the office stopped and exited his unmarked police vehicle, the victim brandished a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer then shot the victim, who has been identified as Rodney Deron Edwards, 35, of the 7700 block of Normandy Road, in Landover. He was taken to nearby hospital where he died a short time later.

The officer, a two-year veteran assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District IV, has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.

Police say they don’t know why Mr. Edwards was lying next to the road or why he pulled the gun.

The shooting is the 15th involving county officers, said Cpl. Henry Tippet.
