JERUSALEM — Israeli officials have told Egypt’s military leaders that Israel might strike against militants in the Sinai Peninsula if Egypt cannot stop them from firing rockets into the Jewish state, a leading Israeli newspaper reported Monday.

Egyptian officials said Israel recently had sent a resolute “and even threatening” message to Egypt’s military rulers about their failure to prevent violations at the Israeli border, Ha’aretz reported.

The message included hints that Israel might be forced to take direct action in Sinai if there was no alternative, the newspaper reported.

Israel delivered the message after last week’s rocket attack on the Israeli resort town of Eilat. No injuries were reported in the rocket bombardment, which was launched from the Sinai.

Egypt announced last week that it was sending additional forces into the Sinai, including dozens of armored vehicles, to help secure the border with Israel.
