MPD officials arrived at the task force’s meeting armed with ample evidence that automated enforcement is decreasing traffic-related deaths in the District. The city installed red-light cameras in 1999 and speed cameras in 2001, and saw a 65-percent decrease in road fatalities by 2010 — far exceeding the nationwide decrease of 20 percent, according to Ms. Sutter.

The District has experienced 11 traffic-related deaths this year, she said, about a 60 percent decrease from this time last year.
