A prominent D.C.-area swim coach was arrested Thursday and charged with child abuse over allegations that he molested a female he once coached for several years in the 1980s.
Rick Curl, 63, is being held at the Montgomery County Department of Corrections on $50,000 bond after turning himself in to authorities Thursday morning.
Mr. Curl, who co-founded the former Curl-Burke Swim Club in 1978, is accused of sexually abusing a woman from the time she was 13 and engaging her in sex acts until she was 18.
The allegations first came to light in July, when the Washington Post ran a story in which the woman said Mr. Curl later paid her family $150,000 to cover up the incidents.
Authorities began investigating Mr. Curl shortly after the story ran, and the report led USA Swimming to issue a lifetime ban against him last month.
The swim club, which has trained Olympic swimmers including 1996 and 2000 gold medalist Tom Dolan and 2012 gold medalist Katie Ledecky, changed its name to the Nation’s Capital Swim Club following the scandal.
