NEW YORK (AP) - Dozens of sex offenders are being held in New York prisons past their release dates under a state law that governs where they can live.
The law has been in effect since 2005. It bans many sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school.
Those unable to find such accommodations often end up in homeless shelters.
But the New York Times reports (https://nyti.ms/XF1Jyd) that parole officials ruled in February that the 1,000-foot restriction also includes homeless shelters.
Most New York City homeless shelters are within 1,000 feet of a school.
That leaves sex offenders with no place to go once they have served their sentences.
The Times says some of them have filed petitions demanding to be released.
