The third baby Jesus statue in three years was stolen from a Nativity scene near the Washington state Capitol grounds.

Ron Wesselius has coordinated with state officials each year to put up the display a few hundred yards from the Washington Legislative Building. The theft is believed to have occurred Dec. 21 or early Dec. 22.

“Where’s the free speech?” Mr. Wesselius told the Olympian Wednesday. “Why can’t different sides have different opinions and respect one another?”

Washington State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins told the Olympian that the police take the theft seriously, even if it will be a tough case to solve.

“We don’t want people’s stereos stolen out of their cars when they visit the Capitol. We don’t want women’s purses stolen. And we don’t want a baby Jesus stolen out of a manger scene,” Mr. Calkins told the newspaper.
