BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - The San Francisco Bay Area city of Berkeley will vote in November whether to impose a tax on soda.
The Berkeley City Council voted Tuesday night to put a measure on the ballot that would impose a penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages such as energy drinks. Diet sodas and juice would be exempted.
San Francisco is also pursuing a soda tax ballot measure. Voters in the city of Richmond, also in the Bay Area, defeated a soda tax in 2012.
A bill that would have made California the first state in the nation to require warning labels on sodas and other sugary drinks effectively died last month.
