AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Prosecutors in northeast Ohio say a 33-year-old man stabbed his mother to death then lived in the house with the decomposing corpse for about six months.

Michael Petrie’s trial on charges of aggravated murder and abuse of a corpse began Tuesday in Akron. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Barberton man is accused of killing his 67-year-old mother Maureen Petrie. Prosecutors say he left his mother exactly where he killed her and left two murder weapons - including a martial arts dagger-like weapon - near her body.

His attorney says he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was off his medication at the time.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group (https://bit.ly/1pEnO7x ) reports that a judge pronounced him mentally competent to stand trial.
