MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - When visitors come to the Grand Strand this Memorial Day weekend they will find heightened security, a 23-mile traffic loop but also goodwill ambassadors.
Local media outlets report almost 50 local residents have signed up to be ambassadors.
They will greet visitors, give directions, answer questions and make sure visitors know about the one-way traffic loop designed to keep to keep traffic moving at night during the Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
It’s the first time in about seven years that Myrtle Beach has used the ambassadors during the weekend.
The volunteers wearing bright orange shirts will work four-block areas on four-hour shifts.
The safety plan and traffic loop were put in place after the weekend turned deadly last year and three people were killed in shootings on Myrtle Beach’s Ocean Boulevard.
