SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho (AP) - The police chief in Spirit Lake is stepping down after two years to accept a job as a bomb-sniffing dog handler at a U.S. embassy in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Chief Keith Hutcheson tells the Coeur d’Alene Press (https://bit.ly/1Kcyac8 ) that the opportunity was unplanned but a contractor made him an offer that will help his family.

He declined to name the company and said he hasn’t been told which country he’ll be assigned to.

The 47-year-old Hutcheson makes $22 an hour as police chief in Spirit Lake, north of Coeur d’Alene.

Hutcheson was a bomb-sniffing dog handler at the U.S. embassy in Iraq in 2013 before taking the Spirit Lake job. He previously worked in law enforcement in northern Idaho since the 1990s.
