BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Chittenden County residents are being warned of a phone scam involving jury duty.

The Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department and the Vermont Attorney General’s Office said Friday that many Chittenden County residents have reported receiving calls from a person claiming to be a deputy sheriff or an elected court official who tells them they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine.

Authorities say the call is not from law enforcement and is a scam.

Officials say law enforcement or court system employees would not ask for a fine to be paid via a wire transfer or pre-paid debit card.

People who receive such calls are advised to hang up and not to return messages.
