FORT KENT, Maine (AP) - The northern tip of Maine is playing host to an international tournament in which sport fishermen will seek one of North America’s most sought-after freshwater fish.

The annual Fort Kent International Muskie Derby began Friday and lasts until Sunday. The tournament is taking place on the St. John River and its tributaries west of Grand Falls. The fishermen are seeking muskellunge, a large member of the pike family that is also known as “muskie.”

The derby first started in 2003 to promote the fishery. The fish faces no significant predators in the St. John River and derby organizers say the tournament helps manage their population.
