LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A new indoor ice rink is set to open in Lincoln about eight years after $7 million was donated for its construction.
The Lincoln Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1OtNtLk ) reports that the $11 million Breslow Ice Hockey Center is scheduled to open Tuesday. Former Nebraska state auditor John Breslow had donated $7 million in 2007 for the construction of the center, which will be run by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The professional-sized ice rink also received a $2 million donation from the West Haymarket Joint Public Agency and a land donation from the city of Lincoln.
Work on the project had been delayed while university and city officials focused on finishing Pinnacle Bank arena.
Rink Management Services Corporation Vice President Glen Danischewski says the center will be the headquarters for state skating, hockey, curling, broomball and other activities.
“Until now, we’ve only taken the Zamboni to it,” Danischewski said. “The first person out there will be the first person to skate on this new sheet of ice. They’ll be the lucky ones.”
He says accommodations for club and youth hockey teams, intramural athletes and casual and competitive skaters have been included in the center.
He also expects to hold Special Olympics activities there in the future.
According to Danischewski, there are no definite plans to expand the center at this time, but that it was built with future expansion in mind.
“You’re not going to find anything like this anywhere else,” he said. “This is really a community center.”
