MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Former West Virginia University and Rochester Institute of Technology president Paul Miller has died.

The universities announced Monday in separate news releases that Miller died Friday at age 98.

Miller credited his experiences in 4-H programs as a child for inspiring his educational goals. He worked as a county agricultural extension agent after graduating from WVU with an agriculture degree. He made expanding the university’s land-grant service mission a priority during his presidency from 1962 to 1966.

In 1966, Miller was appointed assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare.

He later served as a professor at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and as Rochester Institute of Technology’s president in New York from 1969 to 1979.
