YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a water leak from a broken pipe likely caused a mudslide that prompted the evacuation of a senior housing complex in Yonkers.
No one was injured in the Wednesday incident on Walsh Road that officials initially said could be related to melting snow and ice.
But Yonkers Fire Commissioner John Darcy says the water leak on Ashburton Avenue probably contributed to a 30-foot-long section of a 20-foot high retaining wall to collapse behind the complex.
It sent mud into the rear of the 104-unit building, uprooting some trees but causing no injuries.
The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1NL0WRB ) says about 110 people were relocated after authorities became concerned it would be difficult to get residents out if more mud entered the building.
