HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say two Michigan State Police workers escaped serious injury when the patrol car they were sitting in was struck by a car going full speed on a Detroit-area freeway.

State police Lt. Michael Shaw said a distracted driver drove onto the left shoulder of Interstate 75 on Thursday afternoon and slammed into the back of the parked police car. The trooper and dispatcher-in-training were taken to a local hospital and the trooper was later released.

Investigators say the driver, who wasn’t hurt, was going about 70 mph when he struck the patrol car on a stretch of the freeway in the enclave of Hamtramck. He’s being questioned.

The freeway’s southbound lanes were closed for part of the afternoon.
