CHICAGO (AP) - Friends and relatives are mourning the stabbing death of a Chicago picture framer who worked with local artists and was well-known in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Authorities say 43-year-old Rudy Avina died at Simone’s Bar in Pilsen on Saturday when a man stabbed him in the neck.
Twenty-nine-year-old Ulises Almaraz of Berwyn faces one count of first-degree murder in connection with Avina’s death. Almaraz was ordered held without bond Sunday. Attempts to find an attorney for Almaraz who might comment on the case were unsuccessful.
Friends say Avina’s framing can be seen throughout the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.
Avina was a friend of the slain war reporter James Foley and helped paint a mural honoring Foley in Pilsen, where Foley lived periodically.
