ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia university has received a new name.
The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents made the change on Tuesday, re-naming Georgia Regents University to Augusta University.
The system in 2012 merged Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University. The name Georgia Regents University was selected, upsetting many in the Augusta area.
Chairman Neil Pruitt says the change builds on the university’s partnership with the community. About 9,000 students attend the university, which includes the Medical College of Georgia.
Officials say the name change is effective immediately.
