ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The federal government is suing a former New York official, claiming he paid for his daughter’s wedding instead of making restitution for fraud.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Albany says it has sued 54-year-old Joseph Strevell and 30-year-old Nicole Strevell Childrose.
Strevell is a former New York deputy secretary of state. He was convicted in 2007 of defrauding a state-sponsored nonprofit agency and ordered to pay the state more than $111,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say he repaid less than $10,000 while maintaining he couldn’t satisfy the judgment. Authorities say an investigation revealed he made fraudulent transfers of $28,000 to his daughter for her wedding in May 2014.
It couldn’t be determined if Strevell has a lawyer. Childrose’s lawyer says the government is “attempting to extract money from an innocent bystander.”
