LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A Pulaski County circuit judge has ruled that the family of a Harding College professor who was abducted and killed should be allowed to see the Arkansas State Police investigative file under the state Freedom of Information Act.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1ROYwpW ) reports that Judge Mackie Pierce’s ruling doesn’t mean that the family will be able to see the police findings anytime soon. The agency has filed notice that it intends to appeal the ruling to the Arkansas Supreme Court.
It’s been more than 50 years since the slaying of 59-year-old Ruby Lowery Stapleton, and no one was convicted in the case.
State investigators rejected an open-records request from Stapleton’s granddaughter. They said the investigation into the October 1963 slaying was ongoing.
The Keech Law Firm of Little Rock sued on the granddaughter’s behalf in December 2013.
