BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Xcel Energy customers in North Dakota will get a refund as part of an ongoing settlement in the utility’s dispute with the federal government over the storage of spent nuclear fuel.
The North Dakota Public Service Commission on Wednesday approved the refund, which totals about $700,000 and will average about $3 per customer.
The Minneapolis-based utility had extra costs because the U.S. Department of Energy did not remove spent fuel from two Minnesota nuclear plants by a 1998 deadline.
Xcel reached a $100 million settlement in 2011 with the federal government over costs the company incurred. Xcel has since refunded money to its customers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and the Dakotas.
North Dakota Xcel customers have been credited or reimbursed about $11 million to date, or about $47 per customer.
