EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Some travelers aren’t pleased with sloped metal benches that are designed to discourage loitering at a Lansing-area train and bus station.

Lansing State Journal columnist Judy Putnam reports (https://on.lsj.com/20q6NAk ) that following complaints the Capital Area Transportation Authority ordered about $24,000 in benches with level seats for the $6.3 million Capital Area Multimodal Gateway.

The East Lansing station opened for bus service in November and train service in January. Janet O’Brien of Haslett, who recently took a train from the station, says she tried to sit but “would find my bottom sliding.” She says it was “very uncomfortable.”

CATA spokeswoman Laurie Robison says sloped benches fit with the building’s design and were recommended by the project’s architect. Benches with sloped seats will be moved outdoors for additional seating for travelers.
