Last night at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill.
BY THE NUMBERS
26 Consecutive home wins for Illinois, which is the nation’s third-longest active mark behind only Washington’s 29 and Gonzaga’s 28. Illinois has not lost at Assembly Hall since losing to Purdue on Jan. 10, 2004.
2001 The last time Georgetown defeated a team ranked 11th or higher in the AP Poll entering last night’s contest against No. 11 Illinois. The Hoyas dropped then-No. 11 Seton Hall 78-66 on Jan. 6, 2001, en route to a 13-0 start. That was also the last year the Hoyas particiapted in the NCAA tournament.
10-0 Opening run for Illinois, a quick start for the Illini which virtually doomed the Hoyas from the outset. Georgetown didn’t record its first field goal until Roy Hibbert flipped in a bank shot with 14:27 left in the first half. The Hoyas, who seemed in awe of the Assemby Hall din, finished the first half with only five field goals and were trailing 28-13 at halftime. The anemic half was not the team’s worst under John Thompson III. In a 64-49 loss at Boston College last season, the Hoyas tallied just 12 first-half points.
