Redskins Report

SEEN AND HEARD

Right tackle Jon Jansen was in the middle of everything after yesterday morning's practice. As usual, he and center Casey Rabach commandeered an equipment cart with the keys in the ignition and drove up the hill to Redskin Park, avoiding a sometimes taxing walk.

Later, Jansen was wheeling a cart through the complex's lower level, handing out 36 milkshakes he had shipped from Whitey's, a favorite eatery in his home state of Michigan.

THE BUZZ

CLINTON PORTIS (down)

The franchise running back missed a second consecutive day of practice with knee soreness/tendinitis. Not a great thing to happen so early in training camp to a player who missed most of 2006 with shoulder and hand problems.

SHORT PRACTICE (up)

After an intense workout in intense heat the previous afternoon in full pads, the Redskins were given a small break yesterday morning — a 69-minute practice. The morning practices usually have lasted 90 minutes to two hours.

KICKING COMPETITION (down)

For the first time since Joe Gibbs returned to the team, there isn't an open competition at kicker or punter. Shaun Suisham and Derrick Frost are the only ones on the roster, meaning they really would have to stink to get cut.

LONG SHOT OF THE DAY

Ryan Hoag

Age: 27

Position: WR

Ht/Wt: 6-2/200

College: Gustavus Adolphus

Hoag's interesting journey included stops in the ACC (Wake Forest) and MIAC (Division III Gustavus Adolphus in Minnesota). He had 144 catches and 29 touchdowns in 31 games with the Gusties. He was a seventh-round pick by Oakland in 2003 and also has spent time with the Vikings. The Redskins are committed to most of their receiving group, so Hoag would need the front-line guys to break down to get a roster spot.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE

4 p.m. practice (Open to the public)

HE SAID WHAT?

"We're still trying to figure out how to get Chris Cooley covered." — Redskins safeties coach Steve Jackson on the starting tight end
