The mayor of Berwyn Heights and his wife, whose home was raided for drugs, were innocent victims of drug traffickers, Prince George’s County Police Chief Melvin High said.
In a statement issued Friday, Chief High said he regrets the killing of the family’s two dogs in the July 29 drug raid.
Authorities raided the home of Mayor Cheye Calvo and his wife, Trinity Tomsic, after intercepting a package shipped to Mrs. Tomsic that was filled with 32 pounds of marijuana. During the raid, law enforcement officers broke down the door and shot the two dogs.
Police now think it was part of a drug smuggling scheme that sent packages to unsuspecting recipients. The packages would then be picked up by someone else as part of the scheme. Police have made two arrests in the case.
The couple Thursday requested a federal civil rights investigation, which the FBI promptly opened. The couple said they suspect there may be a systemic abuse of search warrant powers in the county.
