Rock CartwrightFRIDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS
*Severe weather canceled the afternoon session, the first scrubbed practice of coach Jim Zorn’s tenure.
*Second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly continued to impress. He looked much like he did at the start of his rookie training camp — before knee woes ruined his season. Kelly got behind two-time Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall for a pretty touchdown catch.
*While backup quarterbacks Todd Collins and Colt Brennan have made their share of nice throws, neither is a threat to starter Jason Campbell. Zorn spends more time with Brennan because the second-year man needs more coaching… and maybe because Brennan could wind up starting in 2010 if Campbell leaves as a free agent. Collins will turn 39 that November — not exactly prime time for an NFL starter.
*Best news of the day: The foghorn-lunged fan who announced everything that happened — tackle by No. 59, London Fletcher, middle linebacker, 12th year from John Carroll — didn’t return after being impossible to escape Thursday.

FOUR DOWNS
With RB/KR Rock Cartwright
1. On being worried about his status with a roster bonus due last month: “I’m always worried about things like that, but I can’t control it. All I can do is play football and control what I can control.”
2. On serving as special teams co-captain last year: “I’m always going to feel like I’m a captain because I try to lead by example, and as long as I’m here, I just want to keep doing that.”
3. On getting into a rhythm with kickoff returns: “The more you do it and the better you see things, the easier that it gets. The coaches do a good job of giving me reps in practice without [live tackling].”
4. On replacing special teams standouts James Thrash and Khary Campbell: “Some guys will definitely have to step up. We’re going to miss those guys tremendously — they were big-time for us on special teams.”
NUMBER OF THE DAY
