A British organization has beaten the United States in one entrepreneurial venture, arranging the first tour by Western tourists in Iraq since the 2003 invasion. The 15-day tour concluded earlier this week with the eight Britons and Americans in the group feeling safe but disappointed that many facilities remain closed, the Associated Press reported.

Besides the ancient ruins of Babylon and Ur - the site of the destroyed golden-domed shrine in Samarra, where a 2006 bombing brought months of sectarian violence, and the semiautonomous Kurdish region - the group presumably saw something just as exciting: a country enjoying new freedom and increased security. It’s no wonder that President Obama joked on “60 Minutes” Sunday, “If you had said to us a year ago that the least of my problems would be Iraq, which is still a pretty serious problem, I don’t think anybody would have believed it.”

Well, believe it.
