OPINION:
Concerning the story “Conservatives seek Reagan litmus test for RNC funding” (Page 1, Tuesday), the unnamed strategist who laments the possibility of driving independents from the Republican Party would have a valid point if “independent” meant “moderate.” However, it has been my experience that “independent” is tantamount to “conservative who cannot find someone to vote for” or “conservative who has been misused by both parties.”
Conservatism allows for a “big tent,” but Republicans should be careful to avoid the folly of the single-issue voter, who regularly sells his soul (or at least his vote) to the devil for a cookie - and the cookie isn’t even that good.
