Summary Box: Intel buys chip tech in phone push

- Associated Press - Monday, August 30, 2010

INTEL'S DILEMMA: Intel Corp. is at risk of missing out on the next great opportunity for semiconductor companies _ smart phones _ which is why it has decided to buy the wireless-chip division of Germany's Infineon Technologies AG

WHAT INTEL GETS: Intel would become the fifth-biggest supplier of mobile-phone processors if the deal closes as expected in the first quarter of next year.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: Intel is the world's biggest maker of computer chips, but its current chips are seen as too power-hungry for smart phones, which are threatening PCs as gateways to the Internet.
