Northwest Washington’s Spring Valley community offers a quiet oasis within minutes of downtown Washington, Georgetown and the nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

This prestigious neighborhood of elegant homes, located off Massachusetts Avenue between Ward Circle and Westmoreland Circle, is known for its stately architecture, gardens and mature trees. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance of most Spring Valley homes.

One of Spring Valley’s premier homes, located at 4717 Quebec St. NW, is on the market for $2,950,000. Built in 1949, this home has been extensively renovated and expanded with a seamless three-story addition by local architect Dale Overmeyer. The home now has approximately 6,800 finished square feet on four levels with seven bedrooms, six full baths and two half-baths.

The home’s grounds cover approximately a quarter-acre and include extensive landscaping, a custom-designed deck and lush garden beds. A flagstone terrace and border surround a heated outdoor swimming pool. The brick exterior is complemented by a red tile roof and a copper roof over the family room.

Inside, this home has a center-hall entrance with a powder room and a glass door at the opposite end leading to the deck and rear garden. The formal living room has walls of windows at either end of the room overlooking the front and rear gardens, along with a wood-burning fireplace.

Two sets of French doors flank the fireplace and lead into the study, which has built-in floor-to-ceiling bookcases and French doors with a Juliet balcony overlooking the rear garden.

The formal dining room, on the opposite side of the foyer, has French doors, a wall of windows, a ceiling medallion and two built-in china cabinets.

The library includes pocket doors, a wood-burning fireplace, a wall of windows overlooking the deck and a wall of built-in bookcases and cabinets.

The main level also has a butler’s pantry with a granite counter, a wine refrigerator, a dishwasher and extensive wood and glass cabinets. Nearby is the center-island kitchen, which has granite counters, cherry cabinets and top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances. The kitchen opens to a breakfast area and family room with three walls of windows overlooking the rear garden, a glass door to the deck and a cathedral ceiling overhead. Nearby is a mudroom with custom-built cubbies, a second powder room and doors to the garage and the side of the home.

The second level features an expansive master retreat with radiant-heat floors, a bedroom with two built-in window seats surrounded by custom-built cabinets and drawers, an extra closet and a wood-burning fireplace. The suite also includes dressing rooms with built-in cabinets and drawers and hanging areas, plus a luxury bath with marble flooring, two vanities, a soaking tub surrounded by windows and a walk-in shower with mosaic flooring, a seamless glass door and a steam unit.

Each of the three additional bedrooms on this level has a private full bath. The second bedroom has a built-in desk and the fourth bedroom has a large storage room in addition to a walk-in closet.

The third level includes two more bedrooms, a full bath and a private sitting room. Residents can opt to use the sixth bedroom as a play room, art studio or home office. The entire level includes multiple closets for clothing and storage.

The finished lower level includes a recreation or game room with front and rear windows, a custom-designed window seat and French doors to the rear garden. The recreation room has a kitchenette with tile flooring and granite counters for catering or entertaining by the swimming pool. The lower level also has a media room with a home theater, a full bath, a laundry room and an au pair suite or guest bedroom with two closets.
