Two men were killed Monday night in unrelated shootings in the District, bringing to five the number of homicides in the District since Saturday night, the Metropolitan Police Department said.
An employee of a Southeast convenience store was fatally shot during a Monday night robbery, MPD spokesman Officer Araz Alali said.
Around 8:30 p.m., police responded to the store in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. for a report of a robbery and shooting. Officers found Mohammed Muktar Abdulselam, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound. Mr. Abdulselam, of Northeast, died later at a local hospital.
About 10 minutes earlier in an Eckington neighborhood, Eric Kearney, 22, was also fatally shot, police said. Around 8:20 p.m., police found Mr. Kearney suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 1600 block of Lincoln Road Northeast. Mr. Kearney, of Northeast, was taken to a local hospital where he died.
Early Saturday, two gunmen opened fire on a group of men a few blocks from where Mr. Kearney was found. In that incident, the three men were chased down an alley in the 200 block of Q Street Northwest by two suspects and fired upon. One man was shot in the hip and another in the hand, MPD spokesman Anthony Clay said. The men's injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police could not say Tuesday whether that shooting was related to Mr. Kearney's death.
Over the weekend, three others were killed in separate incidents. Police are still looking for suspects in all five of the slayings.
Monday's shootings bring the total number of homicides in the District up to 91. Last year at this time, the District had recorded 105 homicides, Officer Alali said.
