“There’s a number of people in favor of returning the body,” he said. “Some are against it. I found that the vast majority of people didn’t feel strongly one way or the other until they heard me tell the story.

“I would like to see it resolved outside of court, considering it’s spiritually important to Bill and the Sac and Fox tribe. I would breathe a little easier if I could help speed the process along.”

A former college tennis player at MIT, Rob said that Thorpe’s century-old story can still inspire others.

“He really epitomizes the American underdog,” he said. “He didn’t have the training. He encountered tons and tons of racism, many barriers to just compete. But he still was successful. The Thorpe name has been a large part of my family’s life. It’s important to us. But it should be important to everyone.”
