Train hits SUV in Bladensburg, injures woman in vehicle

- The Washington Times - Tuesday, July 24, 2012

A woman is in stable condition in Prince George's County Hospital after suffering serious injuries when a freight train hit the SUV she was driving in Bladensburg on Tuesday.

Hyattsville police said a 36-car train traveling north hit the back of the SUV as it was crossing the tracks.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 10 a.m. and found the vehicle on its side with the woman trapped inside.

The lights and signal bells were working at the crossing and the train blasted its horn as it approached the crossing, Hyattsville Police Sgt. Chris Purvis said. Sgt. Purvis said the SUV was stopped behind a big box truck behind the tracks.

"It looks like she wasn't familiar with the intersection and she followed the truck over the tracks," he said.

The crossing has no arm guard that lowers in order to stop vehicles from crossing.
