LOS ANGELES (AP) - Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy went on the disabled list with a bizarre injury Monday night after breaking his right hand when a suitcase fell on it.
Lucroy said he got hurt while reaching under the bed in his hotel room Sunday night for a lost sock as his wife moved a suitcase that fell on his hand. He took some swings at Dodger Stadium before Monday's game to test his hand and it became clear he couldn't play. X-rays revealed the break.
Ravaged by injuries this month, Milwaukee put Lucroy on the 15-day disabled list after their 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He became the seventh Brewers player to go on the DL.
In his third major league season, Lucroy has been one of baseball's best catchers this year. He is batting .345 with five homers, 30 RBIs, 10 doubles and four triples. He homered twice and had a career-high seven RBIs on May 20 against Minnesota, his first game in the cleanup spot for the Brewers.
He was leading the majors with a .514 batting average with runners in scoring position.
Lucroy, who turns 26 next month, agreed in March to a five-year contract with Milwaukee worth about $11 million. The deal, which includes a club option for 2017, would increase to $13 million if he is eligible for salary arbitration after this season.
