With Mrs. Suu Kyi at his side, Mr. Obama said the U.S. goal is to help sustain the momentum for democracy in Burma, which will be dependent on the building of “credible” government institutions, establishing the rule of law, ending ethnic conflict and ensuring that the people have greater access to education, health care and economic opportunity.

“I want to make a pledge to the people of this country that I am confident we can keep, and that is if we see continued progress towards reform our bilateral ties will grow stronger and we will do everything we can to help ensure success,” he said.
