A 15-year-old boy fatally shot in Prince George's County was the victim of a robber attempting to steal a pair of shoes he was carrying, police said Tuesday.
Charles M. Walker Jr. of Hillcrest Heights was shot once Monday by someone who had demanded a bag he was carrying that contained the shoes.
Police found the teen and the shoes still at the scene when they arrived Monday afternoon at about 4:20 p.m. in the 4100 block of 28th Avenue, a block from his home. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police Chief Mark A. Magaw said at a news conference that investigators have promising leads in the case, but he declined to provide any details on a motive or potential suspects.
"We have a lot of great leads in this case and I'd expect this to close fairly quickly," he said.
The teen, who was a ninth-grader at Suitland High School, is the fifth Prince George's schools student to die since the school year began in August. Chief Magaw said police expect to close four of the cases in the next week.
Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks pointed out that violent crime and robberies are down in the county but called on community members to keep their children away from violence.
"We need our community to come together to make sure that we're not just reacting," she said. "Something greater has to be done. We need our parents to wrap their arms around their children to teach them the proper values."
